10 Questions You Should Ask When Choosing a Roofing Contractor

58156

Having to deal with a roof leak or a damaged roof is stressful enough. Now, on top of it, you need to find the right roofing contractor to fix it. At Ability Roofing we get it. We understand that you want to make sure you pick the right contractor for the job. That’s why we have come up with a list of questions you should be asking to help you choose the right one.

Are you a licensed roofing contractor?
The state of Florida requires that roofers be licensed and certified by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. At Ability Roofing Solutions, we are a licensed and certified roofing contractor. We are also state-certified in the following areas: General, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Swimming Pool Contractors.

Do you have workman’s comp insurance?
Roofing companies aren’t required by law to offer workman’s comp insurance for their employees, however, it’s still a good question to ask. If an injury were to occur on your property, there’s a chance that you could be held liable for the medical expenses. To protect yourself from this happening to you, make sure you hire a roofing contractor with workman’s comp insurance.

Do you carry general liability insurance?
Once you’ve found out if the roofing company has workman’s comp insurance, you’ll want to find out if they carry general liability insurance. This will protect you from having to cover any cost related to damage to your roof, house, or property.

Will you remove my old roof?
Your old roof should always be removed before a new one is put down. However, it’s not unheard of for some roofing companies to just shingle over the old roof. Doing this will only create larger problems for you in the future.

Will you supply your own container for refuse material?
It’s no secret, replacing a roof produces a lot of refuse from shingles, old plywood, nails, drip edge, etc. Make sure that the roofing contractor you hire takes care of bringing their own container to dispose of the refuse.

Can I have your physical address and phone number?
You should always make sure you have the correct contact information of the roofing contractor you hire. Operating out of a P.O. box is typically a red flag, so always make sure that you get the physical address and phone number of the company.

In Florida, we experience hurricanes, and this brings roofers from out of state looking for work. If you hire someone who isn’t local and you have problems with your roof in the future, what are you going to do?

We hear horror stories all the time about roofing contractors who install a roof and cash the check, but when an issue arises, they are nowhere to be found. Our integrity and profound belief in service after the sale means that you will never face this problem. We are not perfect, but should an issue arise, we will be there to make it right. This is just another reason Ability Roofing Solutions is one of the best in the industry.

What is the warranty on my new roof?
You should expect to get at least 25 years out of your new shingles, so ask about the length of the new roof’s warranty. If the roofing contractor says anything less than 25, it should be questioned.

Will there be someone here on-site to talk to if I have questions?
Make sure you know who the project manager is before work starts so you can ask them any questions or concerns you may have.

Will you provide a written estimate?
Make sure you have a detailed written estimate for the job before you sign or agree to anything. The estimate should include the cost of removing the old roof, adding the new roof, materials, and anything else that may come up during the process. You should not have any surprise costs when the job is finished.

What’s your plan if there is inclement weather during the job?
The last thing you want is for your roof, home interiors, and belongings to get damaged because of the weather. Make sure you ask your roofing contractor what precautions they take in the event of inclement weather.
