Hurricane Proof Roofs

Florida homeowners and other coastal residents are well aware of the dangers that hurricanes can inflict on their homes, especially when a hurricane reaches above a category 3. Heavy rain and wind can cause some serious damage to your home, and if you’re not prepared for these circumstances, you’ll have some hefty repair bills to pay, and more importantly, a lack of proper protection from a storm! That’s why it’s so important that you “hurricane-proof” your home as much as possible.

One of the first places you should make sure is hurricane-proof is your roof. Though there are several kinds of coastal roofing options to choose from, some are more equipped to protect you from a hurricane. As one of Florida’s leading roof providers, we know firsthand some of the most important elements to consider when preparing your roof for hurricanes. Here are some things to think about when choosing your roof:

  • Materials. The roofing material you choose for your roof is essential to ensuring that you have protection from a hurricane. While asphalt shingles are a cheap roofing option, they are not the most durable in a hurricane, as they can only withstand up to 130mph, making them extremely susceptible to being blown away. Instead, consider the following options:
  • Metal. Metal roofs can withstand up to 160 mph of wind and can last upwards of 50 years when cared for properly. It is also well sealed and highly durable, meaning it will resist fire and have very few leaks if any. Aluminum and zinc roofs are also resistant to corrosion. Plus, most metal roofs are made of recycled material, and can even increase energy efficiency.
  • Clay. Clay and concrete tiles are highly resistant to storms, withstanding winds over 100mph and lasting roughly 30-50 years. Like metal, they are also often made of recycled materials. Clay tiles can also be easily repaired if there is any damage done: instead of having to replace entire roofs, you can instead just repair the damaged tiles.
  • Slate. Like clay, slate is also wind resistant up to extremely high winds, and warranty’s often last up to 50 years ensuring their durability and longevity. In fact, in many cases, slate roofs can last up to 100 years! Slate is also fairly resistant to hail, so you can get great protection from numerous kinds of storms.
  • Shape. The shape of your roof can seriously affect how resistant your roof is to wind. Most roofers recommend hexagon or octagon shapes with a multiple-panel roof (four or more) to help minimize the impact of the wind. The more panels you have, the more the force of the wind is being distributed on the roof.
  • Slope. Roofs with right angles are also more resistant to the wind– that’s why roofers recommend having 4 or more slopes on your roof. Roofs with 2 slopes are more likely to have wind hit the roof on the flat side of the roof, meaning it will have to withstand a large amount of force.
